Pirelli’s new supercar tyre
Pirelli will exclusively supply tyres for the new McLaren 765LT, the British supercar company’s fastest-ever Super Series car to lap a circuit.
P Zero Trofeo R tyre was chosen as the starting point for this latest collaboration, with Pirelli’s best-performing track day tyre also road legal. Trofeo R has been further refined in a joint effort from Pirelli and McLaren to meet the high-performance requirements of this latest car, following some intense work from Pirelli’s research and development division. For drivers who are less inclined to use their cars on track, Pirelli P Zero tyres are also available.
McLaren 765LT features a 765-horsepower engine that puts out 800 Nm of torque and aerodynamics that place plenty of load through the P Zero Trofeo R tyres. To meet McLaren’s brief for a tyre that is bespoke to the 765LT, Pirelli’s engineers worked on the structure and profile of the tyres, increasing the contact patch to generate more mechanical grip and improve traction, particularly in dry weather.
The tread pattern compound was another fundamental element in achieving McLaren’s objectives. Pirelli says the read design was designed to guarantee the best possible roadholding in a straight line and through corners, reducing braking distances and maximising lateral grip. This extra tyre performance, allied with the innovative capabilities of the 765LTf, allows the car to go faster round a circuit than any other car ever produced in Woking.
