RE:Start secures investment from RACV

Re:Start, a start-up that develops portable electric vehicle (EV) charging units,  announced today that RACV has invested in the company and plans to trial its portable EV charging units in its emergency roadside assist vehicles from late 2022.

The company said its technology is two to four times faster than similar sized charging systems and comes with a patented battery design optimised for roadside use. According to Re:Start, the technology means EV drivers are expected to have a 20km range charge in six minutes.

The collaboration between Re:Start and RACV combines the automotive market expertise and established Emergency Roadside Assist service of RACV with Re:Start’s technical innovation.

Re:Start Founder, Zhiduo (Duo) Zhang, said with the support from RACV, the company can fast-track the development of the DC charging system to provide EV drivers with extra peace of mind.

“The flexibility and convenience of portable EV charging has attracted a lot of attention recently, and several companies are exploring this new technology space. However, I believe the technical breakthroughs developed by our team will make us a leader in the field,” Zhang said.

“Our system has been built from the ground up for optimum size and weight efficiency, leveraging our patented battery and unique charger design. The modular battery system allows the platform to scale to meet any vehicle’s charging needs.

“Working closely with RACV roadside assistance, the system is designed to withstand bumps, water, humidity and extreme temperature, to ensure charging is available under all conditions.”

RACV General Manager Automotive Services, Jackie Pedersen, said RACV was pleased to invest in a venture allowing EV owners to “get a charge where and when they need it.”

“This type of charging technology will be an essential part of the charging infrastructure in Australia in the coming months and years,” Pedersen said.

“RACV is excited to trial the equipment in Victoria. The innovative and compact design will allow our service providers to easily support members’ mobile charging needs out in the field, just like they do today when members run out of fuel.”
