Peugeot GT Models to Benefit From All-New Eight-Speed Automatic

Peugeot Australia is set to launch an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission (EAT8) in various Australian models, starting later this month.

Co-developed with Aisin, the all-new automatic transmission follows the adoption of a six-speed automatic across all models and variants from the entry 208 hatch all the way through to the seven-seat 5008 SUV.

This new Efficient Automatic Transmission (EAT8) brings improved shift quality and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to seven per cent compared with the EAT6, thanks to the following:

  • The change to eight speeds
  • enhanced performance through the extension of the Stop & Start function up to 20 km/h
  • A 2.5kg weight reduction compared to the six-speed auto
  • Freewheeling ability from 25km/h.

Appearing first on Australian-specification Peugeot GT models, the all-new transmission provides improved fuel efficiency and driving performance. It will also underpin the forthcoming 508 Fastback and Sportswagon range.

Product Planning Manager for Peugeot Australia, Justin Narayan, said the all-new transmission delivers performance, efficiency and useability gains.

“The all-new Aisin eight-speed shifts gears more rapidly and smoothly to aid driveability while the new gear shift design sits better in the hand. Simply put, the all-new gearbox offers driveability, efficiency and useability benefits,” said Narayan.

The new gearbox benefits from shift and park-by-wire controls and is easy to use thanks to its ergonomically designed electrical controls and the easy application of paddle-shift. The ‘Park’ function is activated automatically when the engine is turned off.

A new shift-by-wire functionality allows automatic engagement of Drive and Reverse gear as part of the enhanced Park Assist functionality, all without any action on the part of the driver.

The first model to receive the new transmission will be the all-new Special Edition 308 GT variant, which is scheduled for a late-July introduction.

Powered by an all-new, 165 kilowatt, 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, the 308 GT offers outstanding performance and driveability thanks to its lightweight, high output drivetrain.
